Guided Auger Bore

US 89 Farmington to I-84 Main

Nothing Is Certain in Life… Other than Death, Taxes… and Traffic

When the Nix Team was contracted to assist UDOT’s road expansion on Highway 89 with some guided and unguided auger boring, we made like the sewer rat and cozied up next to other hired contractors to get the job done…

Our section of work started with 5 20-inch casings and 4 24-inch casings to reroute sewer and water lines for multiple communities along the highway. In total, these 9 bores were an impressive 2000 lineal feet. We nestled right into this design build project, overcoming the challenging ground conditions—elbows weren’t the only thing we were bumping up against. The ground alternated between extremely rocky conditions to silty sand to impressive boulders that would make Sisyphus sigh, but with the hum of traffic above and the buzzing of contractors next to us below, we set to work. To accommodate the tight quarters below, Team Nix had to get innovative and cut the casing into shorter lengths to execute the auger boring job with precision. We maneuvered our way through the challenges to provide, as our motto goes, the best work you will never see.

Although our section didn’t have any fender-benders, a neighboring contractor couldn’t say the same. A water main near their trench burst and the flood of water below began to put the rush hour above to shame. Lucky for them, Team Nix was on site and at the ready. Although our guys had already been working all day, they worked through the night to help seal the break and repair the damage that had been done. After working over 20 hours to repair that water main break, Team Nix was able to go home to get some needed and well-deserved R&R, feeling happy to help and proud to do a job well done.

After this job was finished, we were commended for being the safest crew on site and the GC was impressed with our ability to work so closely with so many others underground. We’re continuously happy to remind others why we’re the best in the Rocky Mountain West, though. So if you also have a tight job needing to be done right and with precision, give us a call!
